Snap up amazing prizes in this year’s Social Enterprise photography competition

News from RISE

National Winner 2009
Are you a keen photographer or a super social enterprise?

Then get involved with this year’s ‘Social Vision: business at its best’ photo competition. Now in its third year, the photography competition is for the first time being jointly run by Triodos Bank and the Social Enterprise Coalition, in association with Social Enterprise magazine and RISE.

If you can take an image that captures the unique and transformative work of social enterprise, get entering! As well as getting loads of free publicity for your organisation, we have a fantastic prize for the regional winner - a 1 day introduction to film making course at Bath-based social enterprise Suited and Booted CIC. What’s more, if you win the regional heat you will also be entered into the national heat where you could win £750 cash for your social enterprise as well as £750 cash for the photographer, and £1000 worth of print advertising in Social Enterprise Magazine.

Business at its best is about transforming lives through enterprising ideas and solutions; it’s about social and environmental missions guiding the way to financial stability and a more just and sustainable world.

Social enterprises are businesses trading for social and environmental purposes. Simply put, they use the power of business to address some of society’s most pressing challenges.

We’re looking for images that show the passion, people and places using enterprise to drive positive change. So if you’re working for a social enterprise in South West England take a photo that highlights your day to day activities and tell us the story behind the image.

This year’s prize for the regional winner is provided by Suited and Booted Studios CIC, a highly successful award-winning production company that marries the quality of commercial filmmaking with the people-centred ethos of social enterprise.

Sara Strickland from Suited and Booted said:

“We are delighted to offer a 1 day introduction to film making at our studios in Bath to the winner of the South West heat of the social enterprise photography competition. The South West is renowned for its creative and cultural economy and we will be proud to celebrate Social Enterprise Day with the regional winners. As holders of the prestigious Social Enterprise Mark, Social Enterprise Day is an important date in our diary and gives us more opportunities to show how we are different to other businesses.”

Regional heats will be taking place in each of the nine English regions and in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland before the finalists go head to head to win the overall prize. The UK winner will be decided by an online public vote. All of the shortlisted photos will go on display in London during November and will be used to create a new 2011 photographic calendar. The competition is now open and will close on Friday 1 October 2010 at 5pm. The regional finalists will be announced on Social Enterprise Day, Thursday 18 November.

The overall winning photographer will receive a cash prize of £750. The social enterprise featured in the photograph will also win £750 along with one year’s free membership to the Social Enterprise Coalition, an entry ticket for two people to Voice 11, a year’s subscription to Social Enterprise magazine and £1000 worth of print advertising in Social Enterprise magazine.

Past entries have featured apprentices from (Jamie Oliver’s) Fifteen practicing their pasta making, elderly ladies in Devon learning African drumming and a man enjoying a ride on the bicycle he refurbished while working for the homeless charity Emmaus.

Peter Holbrook, CEO of the Social Enterprise Coalition, said:

“We’re really delighted to be partnering with Triodos Bank to run this year’s Social Vision photography competition. Over the past two years we have been amazed by the quality of the entries and the powerful way in which they have communicated the benefits of social enterprise. The competition is a great opportunity for us to learn more about new and existing social enterprises from across the UK and the brilliant work that they do.”

Charles Middleton, Triodos Bank managing director, added:

“This competition is a celebration of the spirit and success of social enterprise, which is the lifeblood of the UK’s future economy. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to review so many fantastic photographs giving a snapshot of social enterprise at work.”
