Climate change Business Advice Network

RISE is helping the sector tackle climate change and optimise the opportunities it presents through this quarter?s Business Advice Network meeting; all of which are now carbon zero. RISE has developed a policy briefing (on the Waste strategy and the Energy White paper) and Dr Matthew Collins, Climate Change Scientist at the Met Office, as well as a range of other experts aided understanding and discussion on how to maximize potential. RISE presented 2 new social enterprise case study films featuring Sarum Solar ? renewable energy installer ? and SOFA project ? promoting the re-use and recycling of furniture and white goods. These case studies are available on DVD from RISE.

The main policy messages resulting from the event are:
* There are some great opportunities for social enterprises in areas like recycling, education/awareness raising, innovations and demonstration projects, and in renewables.
* While a growing number of social enterprises are actively involved in projects related to the environment, this market is perhaps in danger of becoming more commercialised as the issue gains currency.
* A key problem for many social enterprises is getting risk capital for the early stages of environmental projects.
*On the renewable energy, gaining planning permission remains the key obstacle to the creation of community co-op schemes.

Envision: environment means business

Social enterprises in South West England are benefiting from an environmental business support programme to help them improve performance and lower costs. The programme has already helped over 380 organisations save 2.5 million. Like all types of businesses, for-profit and not-for-profit, there are drivers for improved environmental performance. The reasons are two-fold. All organisations need to take responsibility for their environmental impact; climate change and other environmental issues can no longer be left to someone else to deal with. This pressure is combined with the rising cost of utilities, increasing regulations and requirements by funders.

Introduction to car clubs - learn to drive smarter and greener

Members of the public can find out about a smarter and greener way to drive at a free event, An Introduction to Car Clubs, in Exeter at 2pm on Saturday 11 March.
Car clubs give people the flexibility of using a car when they need it, without the cost and worry of owning and maintaining it. The car club owns, insures, taxes, maintains, repairs and cleans the cars and offers people affordable, convenient and flexible access to them.

"Car clubs are a great way for people to have access to a car without the costs or hassle associated with owning one," said Mark Hodgson, one of the founders of Exeter car club co-cars, who will be speaking at the event. Co-cars now has 3 cars in the city and growing.
