In May 2002 the Department for Transport extended Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) to Section 19 Community Transport Operators. The grant is based on the fuel issues and mileage operated to transport eligible passengers. These passengers will include the elderly, disabled, those in receipt of job seekers allowance / income support and many for whom traditional modes of public transport are not available or practical. On average operators receive around £1,000 per vehicle per annum.

RISE was recently invited to submit evidence and attend a parliamentary select committee regarding the contribution made by South West social enterprises in the following important sectors: low carbon technologies, creative industries and the digital economy.

RISE Chief Executive, Lucy Findlay, commented: “This was an important platform for social enterprises in South West England to be recognized for their contribution to the economy.

I welcomed the opportunity to advise the Committee that social enterprise should be seen as a mainstream business model and that social and environmental business considerations must not be lost from the economic recovery debate.”

As part of the Cabinet’s regional tour of the country, RISE was invited to question Ministers when they met in Exeter recently. Lucy Findlay (Chief Executive) attended the meeting and posed the question: “Why is social enterprise not being promoted more explicitly as a business model whilst emerging from the recession, given its economic, social and environmental credentials, rather than profit for shareholder motivations”.
